Thanks so much for reading, Ivana! And thanks for those stats. You rock! You're so right about how outlawing abortion will not stop abortions, only make them more dangerous for women. Women will continue to have abortions...only under unsafe, unsanitary conditions resulting in exploitation, injury, infertility and death. And wherever women's reproductive health is valued and women are empowered to make safe, healthy choices for themselves and their families, abortion won't even be used that often.

This is an amazing post. What the anti-choice brigade doesn't seem to understand is making abortion illegal will not stop abortions, it will only make them more dangerous for women. The following is a quote from a United Nations report: "Restrictive abortion laws do not prevent abortion but force women to seek illegal and usually unsafe abortions. In Latin America, where abortion is almost completely illegal, the rate is between 30 to 60 per 1,000. In the Netherlands, with Europe's most liberal abortion law, only five out of 1,000 women opt for abortion. The average of Western Europe is 14 abortions per 1,000 women."

I had an abortion at 17. Pure stupidity on my part, thinking it (pregnancy)couldn't happen to me. And it did. We went to one of those clinics. CPCs they are called now I guess. I took a pregnancy test, it was positive. They showed us a video about abortion and how bad it was. I left thinking that if I had an abortion I would die. My boyfriend told me we would "have" to get married if I had the baby. I didn't want to marry him. I am amazed at how smart I was back then, because most 17 year olds I know now would have married him and been done with it.

I had to travel to another state to have my abortion, even way back then (almost 15 years ago now) the state I lived in had a parental notification law. And my very religious mother would have made me have the baby. I was not ready.

The abortion itself was, to this day, the best, smartest decision I could have made. I made that decision and I don't regret it. I regret that I can't talk openly about it with my family, but my own children will know the story, because I plan on raising my children as pro-choice. Because I trust women. I trust myself. And I know I made the right decision for me.

Thanks for sending me the link, that was wonderful. I feel exactly the same way. When I actually got pregnant and it turned out not to be a scare, I chose to have my baby as a single mother. It was my choice, and I was greatful I had one. Very well written!

p.s. I used to get my birth control in high school at that same place you went for your test. As a matter of fact, that might be the same place Kate took me for my first positive pregnancy test. She was preggers at the time as well. Less than a year after we were at an abortion clinic rooting for pro-choice together.
